There are many great sculptures and artists from England, here are just a few of them. Henry Moore was a sculptor born in 1898. Moore believed in direct carving of his work rather than using casting. He was most strongly influenced by surrealism and to a lesser extent constructivism. He used the natural world as his source of inspiration and for creative ideas, and his work became famous throughout the world. Moore’s figures were often sculpted in a reclining pose.Sir Anthony Alfred Caro who was born in 1924 had a very unusual approach to sculpture at that time. He used pieces of metal to form sculptures. His style was known as modernist and he worked by welding pieces of steel together. Not only was he knighted but he received several other awards for his work including the Order of Merit.Born in 1914, Lynn Chadwick used materials other than stone or wood to make his sculptures. Instead he used bronze and iron which were welded together to form sculptures. Similar to Henry Moore he was inspired by the natural world, by animals and by the human form.
Reg Butler was an architect who was born in 1913, but only started sculpting in 1944. He was an untrained sculptor whose work focused on the female form. His preferred material for creating his works of art was iron.Kenneth Armitage was a very famous British sculptor who like Lynn Chadwick used bronze in his sculptors that depicted human figures, often in poses that reflected motion. Like Henry Moore he attended art school in Leeds.Sir Richard Long is a world renowned British sculptor whose work is found in galleries around the world. His mentor was Anthony Caro. Sir Long is involved in environmental sculpture in which the landscape is changed or created in some fashion. He was born and still lives in Bristol, England.
Sir Anthony Douglas Cragg was born in 1949. He uses mixed materials to create sculptures and much of his work is based on rearranging familiar objects into new forms. He has won the Turner Prize which is a prize awarded to the best British visual artist.Another winner of the Turner Prize is Richard Deacon who is an abstract sculptor who studied art in London. Often he uses everyday materials such as plywood. He was also named a Commander of the British Empire by the Royal family.Arthur Eric Rowton Gill was born in 1882. His works were described as semi-abstract. He directly carved work from stone, starting in 1910 in Sussex. He carved various stone bas-reliefs on various buildings.
Although most famous British sculptors tend to be men, there are women who are sculptors. One such famous female sculptor was Elisabeth Frin. Dame Elisabeth Jean Frin was part of what was known as the Geometry of Fear School of sculptors that arose after the war, which included Reg Butler and Kenneth Armitage. She used bronze in her sculptures and depicted birds, horses, man and various religious subjects. In the 1960s she became more fascinated and interested in sculpting the human form.
